I love maps. Just ask my sister, who claims that I will draw one at any chance I get. It's true that I like to draw out directions. This house is inspired by topography maps and the sets of drawers in which rolled-up maps are kept.

  1. This brings Robert Rauschenberg to mind.

  2. Wow, I hadn't thought of Rauschenberg, Johannah, but now I totally see it. I wonder if it was a subliminal thing.

Rauschenberg was a huge influence on me in college, not least of all because of his retrospective at the Guggenheim in 1997. I love how tactile his work is, and how there is so much that we bring to it and project on it.

  3. Yes! I went into college feeling that I was "not a 3D artist", but I came out feeling the opposite. I am at the very beginning of truly finding my voice in mosaics, and artists like RR are very influential on the process. (A process that is on hold for the time being, but the kids won't be little forever. Maybe next year I can do a "mosaic a week" 365 project.)
